Get Started

Where to begin?

Modern Pentathlon can seem like a lot at first glance, especially if you try and get started in all the sports at once, so we reccomend getting into it one step at a time.

1. Join Modern Pentathlon Western Australia

Sign up for a FREE stay in touch membership to ensure you hear about all training and events we host or are associated with, including come and try days, intro classes, camps and competitions.

When you're ready to participate in any of our events, you can upgrade to our 3-month Trialist membership or become a full member.

2. Resume a sport you know

Most people interested in pentathlon have participated in at least one or two of the disciplines involved individually. If you aren't actively competing in any of the sports, the easiest way to begin is resuming training in a sport you know. This will allow you to rebuild skills quickly and start building fitness for all the other disciplines.

Haven't competed in any disciplines before?

Don't worry, you can pick any of the disciplines to start with. Laser run is a great one to start with as you can train the skills of shooting and build up your fitness running at the same time. Most of our training sessions are adaptable for almost everyone of all ages, fitness levels and abilities - if you are unsure about whether you are able to participate, or require specific support, please contact us and we'll help you get involved.

3. Add one new sport

Once you've got the fundamental skills of the sport(s) you're currently training in, and feel the training load is manageable, it's time to add another discipline. While learning a new discipline, it is sometimes worth reducing load in other disciplines to allow you more time and energy to focus on learning the new sport.

Your pathway into pentathlon will depend on factors such as when you're available to train, access to coaches and facilities, and your sporting background, however below are some suggested sequences - yellow is the events you would be training while green is what competitions you'll be doing

Fencing is generally the discipline which takes the longest time to master, and you may need to be training in it for some time before you start entering competitions.
